Starting a Thermal Paper Roll Converting Business

The equipment, materials and support needed to turn jumbo thermal paper rolls into packed POS rolls.

Short Answer

What Equipment You Need

To turn jumbo thermal paper rolls into finished POS, cash register (till) and ATM rolls, you need a converting line that unwinds the jumbo roll, slits and rewinds it into finished rolls on cores or coreless, closes the roll tail, and groups and shrink-packs the rolls. GPPE builds these steps into one fully automatic line in 650, 1100 or 1500 mm widths, with inline printing as an option.

Preparation

What to Prepare for the Factory

  • Floor spaceFully automatic POS line footprints range from 8150 × 5980 × 2100 mm (GP-FA650-WP) to 14900 × 8580 × 2150 mm (GP-FA1100-WP-4C with 4-color printing).
  • Power supplyInstalled power is 15 kW for the semi-automatic GP-AR1100-WP and 20–55 kW for the fully automatic models. Tell GPPE the destination country and power supply when you ask for a quotation.
  • MaterialsJumbo thermal paper rolls of 40–120 gsm (40–100 gsm on the coreless line), cores with ID 12–25.4 mm unless you make coreless rolls, and POF transparent or black PE film for shrink packaging.
  • OperatorsFully automatic models run without a dedicated operator at each step; one operator can supervise up to three GP-FA1500-WP lines. GPPE trains your operators during installation.

FAQ

Common Questions

Is GPPE equipment only for toilet paper rolls?

No. GPPE lines convert thermal paper into POS, cash register and ATM rolls, self-adhesive material into label rolls, and plotter paper and vinyl into plotter rolls. Toilet paper and tissue converting machines are not part of the GPPE range.

Can GPPE help set up a converting plant in another country?

Yes. About 98% of GPPE equipment is exported, to more than 50 countries and regions. GPPE engineers install and commission the line on site and train the operators, and overseas service teams and regional partners support customers after startup.

How much investment does a new converting line need?

The price depends on the line width, automation level, printing colors, roll type and packaging options; see what sets the price of a converting line. GPPE quotes each line for your roll specifications and target output.

Can I start with a semi-automatic machine?

GPPE offers the semi-automatic GP-AR1100-WP for 1100 mm mother rolls, with one operator, 32 seconds per cycle for 80 m rolls and 15 kW installed power, alongside the fully automatic models.

Can the same plant later make label or plotter rolls?

Label rolls and plotter rolls are made on separate GPPE line families: label roll lines in 330, 450 and 550 mm and plotter roll lines in 1100, 1500 and 2000 mm. See Solutions.
