What Is a Thermal Paper Slitter Rewinder?

How slitter rewinders turn jumbo thermal paper into POS and cash register rolls, and which specifications to compare.

Short Answer

Definition

A thermal paper slitter rewinder is a converting machine that unwinds a wide jumbo roll of thermal paper, slits it lengthwise into narrow webs and rewinds each web into a finished roll, such as an 80 mm wide cash register roll. Fully automatic lines add core loading, cutting, tail sealing, roll counting and shrink packaging, so the jumbo roll leaves the line as packed rolls.

How It Works

How a Slitter Rewinder Works

  1. Unwinding

The jumbo roll is loaded on the unwind stand; GPPE POS lines take jumbo rolls up to OD 1270 mm and 2 tons.

  2. Slitting

Slitting knives cut the web lengthwise into the finished widths, from 30 mm on GPPE POS lines.

  3. Rewinding

Each narrow web is rewound on a core, or coreless, to the finished length and diameter.

  4. Cutting and tail sealing

The web is cut at the end of the roll and the roll tail is glued and sealed.

  5. Core and core-shaft loading

On automatic lines, cores and core shafts are loaded without manual work.

  6. Separation, counting and packaging

Finished rolls are separated, counted, grouped and shrink-packed.

Types

Types of Thermal Paper Slitter Rewinders

  • Semi-automaticWorks with an operator at the machine, for example the GPPE GP-AR1100-WP: 1100 mm mother rolls, 32 s/cycle for 80 m rolls.
  • Fully automatic converting lineAdds core and core-shaft loading, tail sealing, roll counting, conveying and shrink packaging, and runs without a dedicated operator at each step.
  • CorelessWinds 8–15 mm coreless rolls with longer length per roll and no core waste; GPPE's coreless line also makes core rolls.
  • With inline printingPrints the back or face of the paper by flexo, with 1, 2 or more colors up to 6; ±0.2 mm registration on the GPPE GP-FA1100-WP-2C.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is the difference between a slitter rewinder and a converting line?

A slitter rewinder slits and rewinds the paper. A converting line, such as a GPPE fully automatic line, adds the steps around it, such as inline printing, core loading, tail sealing, roll counting and shrink packaging, so one line delivers packed rolls.

What rolls does a thermal paper slitter rewinder produce?

POS receipt rolls, cash register (till) rolls and ATM rolls from thermal paper, on cores or coreless.

Can a slitter rewinder make coreless rolls?

Yes. The GPPE coreless line produces 8–15 mm coreless rolls, and core rolls can be produced on the same line.

How fast is a thermal paper slitter rewinder?

Speeds depend on the machine. The GPPE high-speed line GP-FA1500-WP rewinds at up to 500 m/min with a 25-second cycle for 60 m rolls; the preprinted and coreless lines run at up to 300 m/min.
